Following the tragic death of Liam Payne, speculation around the fate of his multi-million-pound fortune has taken a new turn.

Legal experts at Higgs LLP suggest that Kate Cassidy, Payne’s girlfriend at the time of his passing, could potentially claim against the estate by making a claim for reasonable financial provision.

Craig Ridge, contentious probate solicitor, at Higgs LLP explains the possibilities.

“Liam Payne’s net worth is reportedly an impressive eight-figure sum, estimated at around £46 million. Alongside his successful music career, he has co-owned and co-founded various ventures, including music publishing and real estate companies. It has been reported that more than half of his fortune is set to go to his son, Bear, though details have not yet been confirmed.”

On what grounds could Cassidy contest Payne’s will?

“Under UK law, individuals who were financially dependent on the deceased may have grounds to claim reasonable financial provision, even if they are not explicitly named in the will. This means that girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, who was reportedly spending up to $25,000 a month on Payne’s credit card, could potentially claim. Claims of this nature are complex and subject to many legal conditions and evidential requirements. The challenge would need to be initiated within six months of the Grant of Probate, so time is a critical factor here.”

What is the likelihood that Cassidy will claim? And does this often happen in high-profile cases?

“Assuming Liam Payne’s will does not attract the exemptions typically afforded to members of the Royal Family, it will become public when probate is granted. This would allow scrutiny of its terms and potentially fuel further commentary and legal action.

“Given the size of Liam’s estate and the high-profile nature of both his career and his death, it’s not uncommon for tensions to arise or for claims to be made against the will. Many celebrities and testators with large fortunes see this happen. We’ve seen the likes of Michael Jackson’s will, Nelson Mandela’s, J. Howard Marshall II and Jimi Hendrix face significant challenges.

Especially considering the early and tragic nature of Payne’s passing, there could be cause for concern that his wishes might not be reflective of his financial responsibilities or the expectations of those dependent upon him.”
